scene analysis: hammer throw

 The scene in reference

I am going to analyse this scene because it has a lot to talk about

Firstly, The Mise-en-sene of the trenchbull's outfit.
Her outfit in many ways is supposed to connote fear. The jacket and tie get-up gives the idea of a solider outfit, soliders connote war, fighting, fear(of an enemy. and it seems far in my opinion i think it's supposed to compare her to the SS. All these negative connotations tells the audience as soon as she is on screen that she is evil and heartless.

second, Camerawork
they do some interesting things with camerawork in this scene.
I shall provide 🌠 screenshots🌠
They want you to be scared and repulsed in this scene
I know because of this extreme close up. The use of an extreme close up here makes you feel uncomfortable like she is invading your personal space. This is also a pov from Matilda and the audience may feel the fear that she feels in this situation.

On a more mise-en-sene note we can see that she hasn't had any pre-production make up to (in a nice way) which makes the scene all the more uncomfortable due to her appearance.

Here we have a high angle double shot. in it the trenchbull is domineering over Amanda and the high angle frames her as being superior meanwhile Amanda is off to the side. The fact that she is placed so high can make the audience empathise for the fear that Amanda may feel.
It also tells us that the trenchbull is the kind of person to brag and parade any power they might hold over someone.

Here they have used a hybrid of a single mid shot     of the child but a mid-close up on the trenchbull. This shows the superiority of the trenchbull compared to the child.
